Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong Joins 'The Voice' as Mentor

The Voice has added another mentor for its third season.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has joined NBC's singing competition as a mentor to Christina Aguilera's team, according to a tweet sent out by the show's staff Thursday night.

"Welcome Billie Joe (@BJAofficial) to TeamXtina!" the tweet read. "We are ready to rock out in Season 3."

He joins previously announced season three mentors Rob Thomas (Cee Lo Green's team), Mary J. Blige (Adam Levine's team) and Michael Buble (Blake Shelton's team).

Armstrong said he and his family are fans of theshow in a statement to the Associated Press.

The Voice has become a hit because "it's not molding artists, it's just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover," hesaid, adding that working with Aguilera is "a lot of fun."

Armstrong started taping Wednesday on The Voice, which has been in production sinceJune.

Green Day has three albums coming out in quick succession, with the first, Uno!, to be released Sept.25. The band also is releasing two documentaries to coincide with the new album trilogy.

Previous Voice mentors have included Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, Alanis Morissette and Robin Thicke.

The third season of the show, which is hosted by Carson Daly, premieres Sept. 10.

'Big Brother 14' Announces Another Big Twist

Big Brother just got a tad more interesting.

"Expect the unexpected" has been the motto for CBS' summer reality staple throughout the series' history and Thursday was no different: Host Julie Chen announced to viewers that the four coaches (veterans of the Big Brother game) may have the chance to compete for the $500,000 grand prize, giving up their current mentoring duties and the $100,000 take they're eyeing if they do so.

Through "America's Vote," viewers can change the game by deciding whether the coaches can have the choice to join the other houseguests to compete for the $500,000 prize. The results will be announced next Thursday during the live eviction.

Chen teased the announcement about two hours before the live show was set to take place, tweeting: "Hey BB14 fans! I'm announcing a BIG game-changing twist on 2nites LIVE show. Who do you think is going home? See you at 9pm." (Coaches and houseguests were already speculating about the twist days ago.)

Big Brother long has been known to change things up from season to season. In last year's 13th installment, the show's theme was "Dynamic Duos," combining previous competitors in the game with new houseguests. This summer, Big Brother brought back four veterans -- Janelle Pierzina (season six, season seven), Dan Gheesling (season 10 winner), Mike "Boogie" Malin (season two, season seven winner) and Britney Haynes (season 12) -- to serve as coaches and compete separately for a $100,000 prize.

For Gheesling and Haynes, who are each down to one player, if America votes to give the coaches the option to re-enter the game, it makes most sense for them to do so. From an entertainment standpoint, the choice is easy.

Kal Penn is heading back to CBS.

The former How I Met Your Mother recurring guest star has been tapped to co-star in CBS' comedy pilot Ex-Men, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

STORY: CBS Orders Comedy Pilot From 'How I Met Your Mother' Producer

FromHow I Met Your MotherproducerRob Greenberg, the single-camera comedy revolves around Carter, a young guy who finds camaraderie living among the more experienced guys he meets in a short-term rental complex. Paranormal Activity 3's Chris Smith will play Carter.

Penn will play Gil, a guy who moves into the complex as he awaits his wife's forgiveness following the world's worst affair -- three years ago.

EricandKim Tannenbaumare aboard to executive produce the project, which marks the network's first pilot order of the 2013-14 development season. Greenberg (Bent, Happy Endings) will write and direct the CBS TV Studios/Tannenbaum Co. pilot.

Penn, whose small-screen work also includes House and 24, is repped by Gersh, Industry Entertainment and Fuller Downs. He most recently completed ABC's pilot Prairie Dogs, which the network passed on in May.

MTV's 'WakeBrothers': 5 Things to Know About the Wakeboard-Sibling Reality Show (Video)

Get ready to meet the WakeBrothers.

Phil and Bob Soven may be brothers, but the professional wakeboarding duo couldnt be more different. Naturally, the oil and water personalities -- combined with competitive sports and a deep-rooted sibling rivalry -- makes for a perfect storm of reality television goodness.

The Sovens stopped by The Hollywood Reporters Cover Lounge to preview their new series, debuting on MTV on Wednesday, July 25, at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Below, THR has compiled the top five factoids you need to know ahead of the series premiere. For more from the duo, check out the video above.

1. This Isnt Their First Go at TV: The WakeBrothers pilot kicks off with a look at a younger Bob with significantly shorter hair -- still living at home with his parents, and Phil, who is in the process of building his own home. At the time, older brother Phil jokes with Bob about still being a virgin and promises that he can move into the new home once its built. The footage is actually from an old pilot filmed by Pink Sneakers (for which their cousin works) and was used to pitch the current show we see today.

Cut to present day: Phil is 23-years-old, Bob is 20-years-old, and the duo are competing against each other on the professional wakeboarding circuit, while living under the same roof and partying with their friends.

2. Meet Phil: Who knows him better than his own brother? According to Bob, Phil is very serious, likes blondes, and gets extra angry. Case in point in the shows very first episode, Bob scales the house to sneak into Phils room and snatches the blanket right off the bed exposing Phil and his lady-company in front of the cameras. Who wouldnt be angry at shenanigans like that?

3. Meet Bob: He lives in a fantasy world, says Phil. He has no sense of reality. And in Bobs world, he goes by the name Matador. Only females can call me Matador, Bob clarifies. If any males call me Matador, I wont answer. (For more on this, hit the 3:10 mark on the video above.)

4. The Show Mixes Wakeboard Stunts With Goofy Pranks: Theres ups and downs in it, but its a lighthearted show, its a comedy, says Phil. Theres some episodes that are real wakeboard heavy and into our lives, and then theres other episodes that are totally random -- just random antics and just screwing around having fun.

5. The Boys are Still Wakeboarding: While Phil is currently on tour and in the lead for the points race, Bob suffered an injury to his knee and will have to sit out the rest of the season. No worries, though, hes still the (self) proclaimed No. 1 in the hearts of the fans.

How Dean Geyer Graduated From 'Australian Idol' to 'Glee' (Video)

SYDNEY - On Monday, Fox announced thatAustralian Idol alumnus Dean Geyer would be the newest addition to the hit showGlee. And not only would the 26-year-old be joining the cast on season four, the blue-eyed looker will be playingLea Michele's latestlove interestBrody Weston, an upperclassman at NYADA who has his eye on Rachel (Michele).

Geyer is a South African born singer-songwriter who first made a name for himself in Australia when he came in third on the fourth season of Australian Idol. The year was 2006 and after auditioning in Melbourne, the Johannesburg native swiftly progressed in the competition, taking on songs like Gavin Degraw's "I Don't Wanna Be," Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" and Ryan Cabrera's "On the Way Down."

But like so many frontrunners, Geyer's journey was cut short, just shy of that year's finale at the Sydney Opera House. Still,Sony signed the singer not long after the show and released one album, 2007's Rush. With a strong debut, he went on tour with popular Aussie duo The Veronicas and was even briefly engaged to singerLisa Origliasso.

Clearly a favorite of TV audiences, Geyer was next cast as a regular on Australian supersoap Neighbors, from 2007 to 2009, and was also seen on FoxsTerra Nova.He made his feature film debut in action drama Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown alongside MMA fighterScott Epstein.

As for his fellow finalists from the fourth season of Australian Idol?They too have seen successful careers.Winner Damian Leith is an established recording artist, TV host and novelist down under, while runner-up Jessica Mauboy has also segued from music to acting, starring in 2010s indigenous musical Bran Nue Dae and in The Sapphires, which had its world premiere in an out of competition screening at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

On hand to plug his support group comedy Go On Tuesday, Matthew Perry is swarmed by a pack of reporters looking to hear how he prepared for yet another dark role.

"Idon't have a lot of experience with grieving, but I have a ton of experience sitting in circles and talking about my problems, quips the former Friends star, who has famously spent time in rehab. I've been doing that for a long, long time so I didn't have to do much research.

He continues, The interesting thing is that common bond creates a lot of laughter, a lot of jokes, and a lot of funny."Come September, the actor, who most recently appeared on ABCs short-lived comedy Mr. Sunshine, will be headlining one of NBCs 10 comedy efforts, playing a man who joins a support group after suffering a personal loss.

Perry says he believes in the value of twelve-step programs, in particular, noting that the takeaway from such a program for his character is that people need people, he says. That kind of belief usually comes out of a sense of need and he realizes at the end of the pilot that he needs that, he adds of his characters realization. Not being alone with it, that's what he has to learn.

As for the actor, Perry who counts Episodes, Parks and Recreation and the British Office among his favorite shows admits he's not yet come up with an explanation for why he has been so attracted to darker comedies in the post-Friends era, though he does note that the projects he pursues are lightening up over time.

Still, he gives it a shot, acknowledging that he tends to gravitate towardsbroken characters who try to be better people. But before the Television Critics Association crowd can write off his new comedy as another Mr. Sunshine, he insists that his character on this show is far easier to empathize with than his on-screen persona on the latter. That guy was sort of in a bad mood and no one really knew why, he says with a chuckle. And this guy has had some very dramatic things happen to him, and hes in denial when you meet him.

Making Go On that much more rewarding for him and hopefully his viewers is that it will allow him to move back and forth between genres. I get to do both things I really enjoy; comedy and drama, he says. I hope I'm playing him in a sympathetic way while still being funny."
