Grab your flourescent shirts, leg warmers and hair spray for tonight's American Idol as the showmoonwalks back to the '80s. What will the Top 8 sing? Idol musical director Ray Chew let the set list out of the bag on Twitter this morning and it includes songs by Cyndi Lauper, Irene Cara, DeBarge and Whitney Houston.
Curiously, songs byMadonna, whose new albumMDNA debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, are missing. Ditto for Lionel Richie, who came in at No. 2 with his country album, Tuskegee.Bruce Springsteen songs are likely hard to clear, but his Wrecking Ball topped the chart on March 13, and no tracks from Aerosmith's 1987 album Permanent Vacationmade the cut, either. What, nobody wanted to tackle "(Dude) Looks Like a Lady?").

Also unfortunate, hardly any New Wave is represented, despite the presence of mentors Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal,who, along with the rest of No Doubt, famously duetted with Sting on the '80s gem, "Message in a Bottle"during the 2003 Superbowl Halftime Show. Wouldn't Colton Dixon have been perfect trying Depeche Mode or a Smiths song? We can dream.
Alas, it sure feels like 1985 this week, and since Chew didn't specify who's singing what, we thought why not speculate:
Genesis, "That's All" -- is there a chance Colton would take this on seeeing as it's a piano driven song? If not, it's all about Phillip Phillips.
Cyndi Lauper, "Time After Time" -- An Idol favorite (it's been performed three times before), whoever chooses this song (Elise Testone?) should rock the mohawk Nadia Turner style.
Bette Midler, "Wind Beneath My Wings" -- The Beaches bummer is a no-brainer for Hollie Cavanagh or Joshua Ledet. Get the Kleenex ready.
Irene Cara, "Flashdance (What A Feeling)" -- Another possibility for Elise Testone, but will she wear Jennifer Beals' signature off-the-shoulder Flashdance shirt?.
Simply Red, "If You Don't Know Me By Now" -- A soulful gem, Ledet could do a good job on this, or Phillip Phillips with a guitar, but we could also see Skylar Laineputting a country spin on it.
DeBarge, "I Like It" -- DeAndre Brackensick seems like the most obvious choice, but why not "Who's Holding Donna Now?," "Time Will Reveal" or "Rhythm of the Night"?
Whitney Houston, "How Will I Know?"-- Jessica Sanchez could clearly handle this uptempo number, but you would think after Whitney Houston night, the girls would shy away from the diva's hit catalog.
Foreigner -- "I Want to Know What Love Is"-- The perfect opportunity for one of the guys to sport a mullet, Rock of Ages-style? Colton Dixon is already half way there!

As for the duets, Idol missed an opportunity to have Phillips and Brackensick duet on the Phil Collins/Philip Bailey duet, "Easy Lover" (Phillips covered Phil with "In the Air Tonight" and Randy Jackson has compared Brackensick's falsetto to Bailey), but we are pretty stoked to see the Stevie Nicks-Tom Petty classic, "Stop Dragging My Heart Around," which Jimmy Iovine produced, on the list. Let's also take a wild stab and saythat Skylar Laine will be featured heavily on the Kenny Rogers-Dolly Parton classic, "Islands in the Stream," and we knew you were all just waitingfor aGeorge Michael-Aretha Franklinnumber. Lastly, we're so excited for The Pointer Sisters.
