AMC's The Killing has more storm to weather than excessive rain of its Seattle setting. Bucking the network's trend of ratings growth, the murder mystery opened its sophomore season with significantly fewer viewers than last year's contentious finale.

The two-hour opener brought in 1.8 million total viewers, earning a 1.4 rating among households for the network between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night. Adding encore broadcasts, the series reached 2.5 million viewers in live plus two-hours.

Overall, the premiere is on par with much of its ratings showing from the first season but down from its successful series premiere and freshman finale.

The last episode of The Killing, which got a lot of flack for not offering enough development in the Rosie Larsen murder mystery, brought in 2.2 million viewers, a 22 percent drop. And that was down from the 2011 series premiere of 2.7 million viewers and 4.7 million for the night.

REVIEW: 'The Killing' Season 2

In the targeted adults 25-54, The Killing took a smaller hit, dropping only 8 percent in core viewers from last season's average and pulling in 847,000 viewers.

Recent AMC premieres and finales of Mad Men and The Walking Dead all set series records.
