A&E's Bates Motel has given Norman Bates an older brother.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl alum Max Thieriot has joined the network's Psycho prequel playing the older brother to the budding psychopath, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

STORY: A&E's 'Psycho' Prequel 'Bates Motel' Finds its Young Norman

FromLost'sCarlton CuseandFriday Night Lights'Kerry Ehrin,Bates Motelwill explore Norman's relationship with his mother, Norma and offer a look at his backstory that helped forge the infamous serial killer.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's Freddie Highmore will play the young Norman, while Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga will play his mother, Norma. Thieriot will play Dylan, Norma's oldest son and the big brother to Norman who is described as a petulant and rebellious James Dean-type.

Thieriot, repped by Gersh, Viewpoint and McKuin Frankel, most recently starred in ABC's untitled Roland Emmerich drama as an astrophysics grad student who learns he's the chosen one to destroy the forces of evil. ABC passed on the project in May.

Bates Motel, which bypassed the traditional pilot stage and was ordered straight to series, will premiere next year.

'Fringe': New PSA Reveals Strict Residency Rules for 2036 (Exclusive Video)

Fringe Season 5 PSA Promo Screengrab - H 2012
YouTube

Welcome to 2036.

In the third Fringe PSA featuring the Fedora-loving Observers, exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, the topic (aka Edict 5) centers on residential protocol for the "natives" and their rights.

PHOTOS: TV Swan Songs: 8 Shows Ending During the 2012-13 Season

Like all things, there are restraints to the rules: "Natives" must remain in their quadrant and it must take place "during daylight time periods." But that's not all. There are repercussions to not following the strict protocol established.

Heed. Obey. Serve.

The first two PSAs, featuring Captain Windmark (Michael Kopsa), revolved around travel and cerebral scans, acting as a preview -- of sorts -- to Fringe's fifth and final season.

Watch the third PSA below:

Fringe returns for the final season Sept. 28 on Fox.

'X Factor' Recap: Old Souls, Glitter, Stalkers and a Potential Star (Video)

Perhaps the least satisfying part about Thursday nights second episode of The X Factor was the length of time. Clocking in at just one hour, it just wasnt enough.

The rebooted version of the show -- no host, backstage footage of the contestants before they hit the stage, mean girl cattiness and competitiveness, and plenty of close-ups of Britney Spears and her pained expressions -- is quite simply, riveting television. The show also found a potential future pop star in Providence and a shorter, heavier, but unbelievably talented 34-year old Adam Lambert disciple in San Francisco.

PHOTOS: 'X Factor' Season 1 Finale: The High and Low Notes

Even better is the documentary-style feel of it all. From the get-go, you are there with the young hopefuls -- in the car, in the cattle call, turning in the paperwork, in the holding area and taking that last, nervous breath right along with them as they take the stage.

Contestant Johnny Maxwell summed it up best, exclaiming that being backstage made him feel like one of the stars in concert you go to see.

Maxwell is an appealing candidate from the start, nervously assessing the situation with one comment to his mother, Theres a heckuva lot of people here.

His mother, Rachel, in a moment of encouragement, told her son, This is the performance of a lifetime, not an audition. Yeah, thats sure to make him calm.

Bravely, Maxwell auditioned with an original song (all of these hopefuls can thank season ones Chris Rene for first taking the risk, proving that sometimes you can impress showing everything you can do upfront). Whats interesting about Maxwell is his song is essentially a hip-hop rap composition, but he also sings his own hook, displaying a sweet tenor. Its interesting and likable at the same time, and his positive lyrics -- been through some struggles, but gotta hold on -- encapsulated his moment perfectly, showcasing his ambition as well as his confident stage presence all at once.

That was a great risk and exactly what we need, said L.A. Reid, while Demi Lovato praised his swag. Cowell told Maxwell he had steel in his eyes (he gave this same assessment to Justin Bieber lookalike Reed Deming on Wednesday nights premiere episode, fyi). It will be interesting to see what Maxwell does in Boot Camp.

Of course, how was the show going to top the mean girls from Wednesday nights episode? No problem, as 22-year old Lexa Berman, who boasted a look judge Simon Cowell proclaimed as Jersey Shore meets the Kardashians, tried to psyche out competitor Paige Strooback by bragging about her acting, dancing and singing skills. Strooback, and the judges, were less than impressed by her lame re-creation of Alex Clares Too Close. Spearscalled Berman out for singing the entire song in "one tone," andLovato correctly cited a likeability problem.

[At first, I thought], wow, this girl is gorgeous,'" she said. "But you came off as really overconfident and it wasn't likable."

At least we know what not to do, said Strooback, whose audition was curiously not aired.

Lovato hoped to find somebody hot that can sing, but for a long stretch of time, it was not to be.

Why is it all of the good-looking people cant sing? asked an exasperated Reid, enduring plenty of eye candy that scorched his eardrums. I feel we have not found a bonafide star today. I need to see some talent.

STORY: 'X Factor' Premiere Recap: Mean Girls, Meltdowns and Mommies

The parade of bad singers with amazing abs continued, ending with the best zinger of the night, courtesy of Britney, bitch!

You cant destroy that song, sweetie, she coldly retorted to one clueless singer, breaking the cardinal rule of reality singing shows: "Thou shalt not take Whitney Houston songs, particularly 'I Have Nothing,' in vain."

Reid got his wish in an unlikely package -- Jason Brock, a 34-year-old tech support guy that longed to show all four judges true San Francisco.

Brock is the kind of guy who sings to customers over the phone, and one girl in the crowd tells him he looks like Elton John. Brock is more like a cross between Jack Black and American Idol season eight runner-up Lambert. He is jovial and immediately likeable, declaring his own stage show would begin in a white spotlight and end in a glitter explosion.

Brock has serious pipes, too. He chose to audition with Billy Joels New York State of Mind, copping American Idol season 11 finalist Erika Van Pelts hairstyle in the process (Van Pelt performed the same song after her famed hair style change, followed by her elimination, on Idol). His entire audition was nothing short of a delight, and he may be the first serious contender in the 30-and-up category to go to the finals if he survives Boot Camp. Reid calls him flawless, while Lovato said his vocals made her want to fall in love with him.

Meanwhile, back in Providence, the judges were awarded with a delicious-looking tiered cake, and Spears comes face-to-face with serious stalker material in the form of Patrick Ford, a 20-year-old cashier who believes the Louisiana pop star could be his sister. Creepy.

Ford came prepared with a floral arrangement and an unwelcome re-creation of the judges hit song Circus. Spears looks so uncomfortable that Cowell just stopped the whole thing dead.

Its like you got into an argument with Britney Spears, got drunk and decided to scream the song at her, he said.

Spears is so mortified, all she can muster up for Ford is a no. This displeased him, as he stood stone-faced on the stage.

Thats all you got for me, Britney? he said.

PHOTOS: Inside Simon Cowell's 'X Factor' Trailer (Exclusive)

Despite that blip, Providence seems to be the city that hosted the best talent. On Wednesday nights premiere, Jillian Jensen mesmerized with her heartbreaking tale of bullying coupled with a stellar interpretation of the Jessie J ballad Who You Are.

The city came up strong once more in the form of Carly Rose Sonenclar, a 13-year-old teen who sings way beyond her years. Despite talking about nerves, the Westchester teen displayed amazing vocal ability and confidence with her torch-song rendering of Feeling Good by Nina Simone. She was almost too good, as if she were lip-synching the song, and Reid called her an old soul.

That wasnt you singing, quipped Cowell. Somebody is behind the screen singing that song.

"Miss Thang, you are a little diva!" enthused Spears. "You were unbelievable. ...You can see, all of us are completely in love with you."

Sonenclar earned four yes votes, bringing the too-short hour to a swift conclusion.

So who were your faves this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Check out video of Sonenclar as young Eponine in Les Miserables from three years ago doing "On My Own," as well as her audition. She displayed the same confidence back then as she does now:

Mondo Guerra Recaps 'Project Runway' Season 10, Episode 9: The HP/Intel Challenge

Mondo Print on Print Portrait - P 2012

[Warning: Spoilers ahead if you havent seen Thursday's episode.]

Its the HP and Intel challenge and yours truly was in the hot seat this week as a guest judge. I have to admit, it was very different being on the other side of that runway. Seeing myself as a judge frightened me a bit! But first lets recap, shall we?

In the Workroom

Its halfway through the competition and the designers are feeling the strain. They want it so badly. Its New York Fashion Week or bust! Speaking of busts, good son Gunnar said he would buy his mom a boob job if he won Project Runway. Random and hilarious.

STORY: Mondo Guerra Recaps 'Project Runway' Season 10, Episode 8: Another Team Challenge Brings Fights, Redemption

Heidi tells the designers to step it up and wow the judges, and then sends them to the workroom to meet Tim Gunn and me! We fill them in on the HP and Intel challenge. The designers must create a modern, runway-worthy print inspired by their heritage.

(On a side note, when we were introducing the challenge, I really tried to connect with the designers. I wanted them to know that we design the best when we show our truth.)

Dossiers arrive for them special delivery. Who else could it be but their loved ones! Its so sweet to see the designers soften. Even Elena lightened up. But for others, the visits seem to throw them off their game. Christopher in particular.

I was proud of Gunnar for sharing that he was bullied growing up. It was touching. I was also surprised at how unexpected Melissas print was considering her aesthetic. Ven needed to step back and realize his print needed help.

STORY: 'Fashion Is Not for Sissies': An Oral History of 'Project Runway's' First 10 Years

Nothing beats a home cooked meal after a long day of designing. Then its like Christmas morning when the fabric is delivered. The designers make their rounds appreciating each others prints when Fabio shares that his design is abstract vaginas and penises. Copulation couture!

Across the workroom, isnt it sweet how the wall is coming down between Christopher and Gunnar? But the best moment came when Tim Gunn called Vens dress an homage to a menstrual cycle. Thats not the kind of maxi dress anybody was expecting.

On the Runway

Anya Ayoung-Chee and I joined the judges panel this week. I have to say, its interesting to see the garments in person, on the runway, and then on TV. Some of my critiques have been swayed since seeing them on Thursdays episode.

Sonjia: Love this look! One of the most successful garments on the runway. The pants are cut beautifully. She looks elegant.

VIDEO: Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn On 'Project Runway' at 10

Elena: I really thought that the print and silhouette of this design worked. When I first saw it, during Tims critique, I was a little worried, but she really pulled it off. I think that the colors she used really softened her harsh line/silhouette. Sucessful!

Christopher: I wish he would have embraced the print and tried to use it to its strength. When he covered it in organza, it got messy.

Ven: This dress was so disconnected. There was an information overload with the three dresses smashed into one. It was confusing. And what about the unprecedented appearance of Tim Gunn with the judges? Was that a Project Runway first?!

Fabio: Once again Fabio was one of my highest scores in this challenge. I thought the cut of the top, the trousers, and the styling was very fashion forward. The print was very cool.

Melissa: Its a smart design. I can see how the neckline influences the shape of the shoulders. Its definitely an eye-catching print. I just wasnt crazy about the styling. Overall, pretty good!

VIDEO: Behind the Scenes of Heidi Klum's 'Project Runway' Photo Shoot

Gunnar: The print was very chaotic to me. I appreciate the message and inspiration behind the print, but the print itself felt busy. The jacket was boxy and looked crafty.

Dmitry: The take-away piece here is really the jacket. I agree with everyone! I just wish he would have used more of the print. Its a print challenge!

The Judges Decisions

In the end, Dmitry was named the winner and Gunnar was bid auf wiedersehen.

I looked so unhappy during my critiques, but honestly I wasn't at all! I was concentrating and really studying each designers work. Trying to be unbiased and score as fairly as possible. I'll work on the stone face!

STORY: 'Project Runway' Preview: Heidi Klum Spills Secrets About Season 10

I was proud of Gunnar in the end. He left with his head held up and through the competition, I feel like he really grew up. I feel like he was very genuine in his exit, wishing everyone luck. I like how he admits that he came to commit and how committing is winning for him. Good luck, Gunnar -- wishing you all the best.

What did you think? Sound off in the comments below! xoxo

Katie Couric and Jennifer Lopez Dish on 'American Idol' Judges

UP: Katie Couric

Fox has yet to officially announce its judges for season 12 of American Idol, but Katie Couric spills the beans on the final four during an interview set to air today on her new talk show Katie.

During a sit-down with former Idol judge Jennifer Lopez, Couric confirms that hip-hop star Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban will join Mariah Carey and Idol fixture Randy Jackson at the table when the show returns in January.

Lopez was confused as to whether the show's producers had made the decision on Minaj and Urban official, asking Couric, "Did they announce?"

When Couric answered, "Yeah," Lopez was elated.

"Oh, thank God. I love Randy," the singer-actress said. "Im glad hes doing it."

The Bronx native also was diplomatic when Couric pressed her to comment on the new lineup.

"Thats an eclectic group," she said. "Ithink they all have something really different to offer, so it should be interesting."

A Fox representative told ABCNews.com: "Please note that the only confirmed judge for American Idol is Mariah Carey. No other judges have been announced at this time.

Fox representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.

'Glee' Co-Creator Ian Brennan: The Show 'Has a New Lease on Life'

Kate Hudson and Lea Michele
Adam Rose/FOX
"Glee's" Lea Michele and Kate Hudson

Glee's much-ballyhooed fourth season kicks off Thursday night as the Fox musical unspools its split location format with story lines from a proposed spinoff set in New York infused with the dramedy's central home in Ohio.

The mild reboot will see the show's core characters -- Lea Michele's Rachel Berry, Chris Colfer's Kurt Hummel and Cory Monteith's Finn Hudson among them -- leave the confines of Ohio and venture out into the real world, following through on a lofty goal that was established in the pilot.

It's a leap that through the summer remained a question mark for the show's 15 series regulars: How would a show set in an Ohio high school service story lines for several characters who splintered off in different locations, including New York, Chicago and L.A.? The ambitious plan also called for the series to bring in new blood, which it has done with the return of Glee Project season one winners Alex Newell and Samuel Larsen as well as fresh faces Dean Geyer (Brody), Jacob Artist (Jake), Melissa Benoist (Marley) and Becca Tobin (Kitty). Throw in multiple-episode arcs for Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker and Glee sounds almost nearly unrecognizable.

PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 4 in Pictures

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with co-creator and executive producer Ian Brennan at Wednesday's Glee season four premiere in Hollywood to discuss revitalizing the series, how the New York location is prime for its new (old) time slot and just how the show will continue to service story lines for 15 returning -- and beloved -- characters.

The Hollywood Reporter: The was it an intentional decision not to do the proposed spinoff and instead fuse both New York and Lima story lines into season four?
Ian Brennan: It all goes back to us having said in the pilot that Rachel was a sophomore. We set the seed for her graduating in three years and at the time, when you're writing a pilot, you're not thinking four years ahead. It was around season two once we knew that the show was working, that we were going to have to deal with this at some point. The was talk of a spinoff, but then it seemed better to incorporate it into the show particularly because we spent so much time -- so much of the show is about telling high schoolers to follow their dreams -- you actually wanted to see your main character go through with it and be the big fish in a small pond to be a big fish in the biggest pond ever: New York City. It seemed like that was what we owed the audience.

How nervous were you to change the series?
It was a little nerve-wracking when we came to it toward the end of last year that this was happening. As writers, we didn't take a hiatus; we stayed working through the break and tried to crack what New York would be like and who was going to be there: who were the characters, how that was going to feel for Rachel. We worked at it for a while. We knew pretty early on that we were going to be able to get Kate Hudson, which is such a crazy get. I personally didn't know how it was going to work but within 30 seconds of seeing the first cut of the first episode, it just works. It's seamless and the show feels slightly different but totally the same; the tone is a little bit different but it's still very much Glee. It feels like the show has grown up and it's just blossomed and we're able to tell bigger stories. The stories feel more adult and it's more suited to 9 p.m., which is good for me as a writer.

PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 4 Cast Portraits

Was it always the plan to bring it back to the 9 p.m.?
We started there so it was always going to be a 9 p.m. show and then Fox wanted us to anchor, which is totally what I would also do as a network. It's nice to find ourselves back there at a time where you can be a little bit more edgy. It feels like the show has some space to breathe, it feels familiar yet totally new. The new actors we have are fantastic and Kate Hudson is so good. It was one of those magic coups that Ryan orchestrated and when he talked about it I was excited. You see her for one second on the show and it just works; she's really adept, talented and sexy.

Will there be three different types of episodes -- purely in Ohio, New York and both locations?
Yes, there will be ones that focus way more on Lima, there are ones that will focus much more in New York. That's what's great about this formula: it allows us a bit more leverage to tell different sorts of stories; we're not always tied to a specific place and we can go back and forth depending on what we're feeling at the time and what the show is telling us. It's like the show has a new lease on life, which is exciting.

Could some of characters who remain at McKinley -- Matthew Morrison's Will Schuester, for example -- wind up in New York for a little bit?
Definitely. I wouldn't be surprised to see Will Schuester show up in New York. That's what's so great about the show -- we're not really losing anybody, we just gain more people and we've always got this amazing cast at any given time in our back pocket. We're tracking them all and know where they all are and it will be great to pepper them back in as it suits the story.

STORY: 'Glee': Artie's Mysterious Plans, Familiar Faces Poised to Return and More Spoilers From the Cast

All 15 of the season three regulars are coming back. How much will they be involved? There are some folks who come back in the second episode briefly. Will their returns be like cameos or larger than an episode?
No, we'll see them in and out. We don't want to just have people for cameos; we want to track them because the audience cares and we care. These are characters we've watched grow up into adults and we want to follow them. It will always be rooted back at McKinley. It really gives us a lot of options as writers.

Will McKinley's senior class this year -- Artie (Kevin McHale), Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), Blaine (Darren Criss), etc. -- also be doing the same thing as Rachel (Lea Michele) and company?
We'll see how this works out as a format but yes, that's what's great: the seniors will graduate and we'll follow them as we go on but then we get a new crop of kids. It refreshes the whole show and is really exciting to write toward.

If the New York location story line proves successful, might you revisit a spinoff idea?
I haven't even thought of that. Maybe, although I wouldn't want to mess with this formula that we have right now because I think it's going to work.

Glee airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Fox. Hit the comments with what you're looking forward to seeing.

'Big Brother 14': Surprise Eviction Sets the Final Four

Big Brother is Not Impressed - H 2012
CBS

When you enter into the Big Brother house on Day 1, the only chance of leaving is through eviction. That wasn't the case this time around.

[Warning: Spoilers ahead.]

With Shane and Jenn up on the block, the remaining five houseguests battle it out to win the coveted POV by completing a puzzle. It took less than 10 minutes to complete and for Shane to be named winner. That meant there were three options: persuade Shane not to use the veto on himself (aka "pull a Marcellas"), have Danielle as the replacement or throw up Dan. The "Dan mist" continues because he avoids the block once again.

PHOTOS: Which Fall TV Shows Will Survive?

But first! It's time for Shane to take Danielle on a luxury trip outside the house to "showmance" it up! It ends up being a show featuring Olympic gold medal gymnasts Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Kyla Ross, Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman (aka the Fierce Fab). Funny, Big Brother is down to its last five too. Highlights include a kiss, a headbutt and several Shane-isms. Interesting to note: Danielle admits her head is telling her to pick Dan, but her heart is leading her to Shane. Oh brother.

By a 2-0 vote, Jenn (aka Jenn City, as she's often referred to) is the latest to be evicted. Thankfully, the rocker chick from New York City isn't too salty about her ouster, telling Julie Chen that she did not regret saving Dan with the veto more than two weeks ago. "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em," Jenn said, before Chen gave her a PB&J sandwich. That's a good attitude to have, considering it was the former Big Brother coach that had a hand in her exit.

Any Big Brother fanatic knows that the final four HOH competition is merely a fight for immunity. The power, ultimately, lies with the winner of the all-important POV, who will cast the lone vote. The HOH competition was a quick seven-question back-and-forth centered on photos the houseguests saw on the memory wall. Dan and Danielle answered six correctly with Shane close behind with five. After the tie-breaker, however, it was Danielle who was named the new HOH, guaranteeing her a spot in the final three.

STORY: How Tim Goodman Fared in Last Season's TV Predictions

For now, it seems Dan stands the best shot out of Shane and Ian to advance to the final three, having solidified final three or final two deals with all remaining houseguests prior to this week. Even if POV goes to Shane or Ian, the plan -- as it stands now -- would see Shane evicting Ian and Ian evicting Shane. (Ian and Shane have no deals.)

What are your thoughts on the final four and who do you think stands the best chance at making it to final three?

The feeds have been off since Tuesday afternoon prior to the taped eviction and will return following Wednesday night's broadcast. Big Brother will air the second eviction of the week 9 p.m. Thursday on CBS.

Voting for America's Choice also opened Wednesday to determine who will receive the $25,000 prize on the Sept. 19 finale.

'Nashville' First Look: Meet the Stella Sisters (Exclusive Photos)

Nashville Someday You'll Call My Name Still - H 2012
ABC/KATHERINE BOMBOY-THORNTON
"Nashville's" Lennon and Maisy Stella

Connie Brittonwon't be the only musical talent in the James family on ABC's Nashville.

ABC's upcoming first-year drama has enlisted sisters Lennon and Maisy Stella to recur as Maddie and Daphne James, the musically gifted daughters to Britton's fading country star Rayna James.

Nashville stars Britton as an aging country music superstar who is paired with Hayden Panettiere's rising star Juliette Barnes in a bid to revive her career. The series, which hails from Callie Khouri (Thelma and Louise), R.J. Cutler and Steve Buchanan, is as much about the country music scene as it is a family drama, exploring the public and personal lives of its two stars.

PHOTOS: The 100 Fresh Faces of Fall TV

The sisters were brought in after the original pilot was filmed, with producers deciding to recast the roles after hearing Lennon, 13, and Maisy, 6, audition -- well before their rendition of Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend" went viral on YouTube.

"When Maisy auditioned for us we were completely blown away. Then she told us she had a 13-year-old sister named Lennon and that the two of them often sang together. So we asked them both to come in and audition," Cutler tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Even though the parts of Rayna and Teddy's [Eric Close] daughters had been written for a 6- and an 8-year-old, we decided on the spot to change the roles to fit Maisy and Lennon's ages. Listening to them sing literally brought tears to our eyes. I'm not just saying that. Their voices moved us to tears. We knew we had to cast them -- and this was months and months before they decided to post a video to YouTube."

To date, Lennon and Maisy's harmonious cover of "Call Your Girlfriend" -- in which they sing and provide a beat using butter containers -- has registered more than 7.7 million views on YouTube in just over three months. The sisters have also covered songs from Jason Mraz, Jessie J, Missy Higgins and more, all available on their YouTube channel, which has more than 103,000 subscribers and 16 million video views.

STORY: ABC's 'Nashville' Will Stay True to its Roots

Lennon and Maisy, who will appear in the pilot as siblings Maddie and Maisy, respectively, will also have their time to perform, including as part of a talent show in what's scheduled to be Nashville's third episode, "Someday You'll Call My Name."

Check out an exclusive first look the musical siblings in the photos below, as well as their rendition of "Call Your Girlfriend," and hit the comments with your thoughts.

Nashville premieres Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 10 p.m. on ABC.

'Scandal' Cast (and Shonda Rhimes) Talk Crazy Quinn Theories and Challenges Ahead

The Newcomer
ABC/COLLEEN HAYES
"Scandal's" Katie Lowes

It's been four months since Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) revealed that Quinn Perkins wasn't who she claimed to be on ABC's Scandal and everyone has a theory on just who the newbie fixer really is.

Since Katie Lowes' mysterious alter-ego became a client at Pope & Associates, the cast has heard everything from the logical -- Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Mellie's (Bellamy Young) daughter -- to the insane -- Tammy Faye Bakker's kid -- as friends, family and acquaintances made their best guesses.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up the cast and showrunner Shonda Rhimes on Tuesday at the Paley Center's fall previews to talk season two challenges and hear the best and most bizarre theories on who "Quinn" -- yes, we're using air quotes -- really is.

STORY: 'Scandal' Cast, Shonda Rhimes on Quinn's Reveal and Mellie's Endgame

Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington)
Crazy Theory: "I heard a theory that she was Cyrus' daughter that he wasn't gay and said so only to get the gay vote but that really he was straight and Quinn was his lovechild from his straight love of his life," Washington says with a laugh. "All the crazy ideas I would send to Shonda and she was like, 'It's handled!' "
Biggest Challenge: "We're shooting Episode 5 and the biggest challenges for Olivia are just brewing. In many different areas of her life, the biggest challenges for her are only just being cooked up."

President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn)
Crazy Theory: "Most people think she's in the witness protection program, which isn't really true."
Biggest Challenge: After Olivia turns in her White House credentials in the season finale, Fitz won't rest until he's able to bring her back into the fold -- and around the Oval Office again. "No matter how hard she tries -- and she will try hard -- Fitz is a persistent guy. Fitz and Olivia can't be easily kept apart," says Goldwyn, who's currently juggling filming his AMC pilot with Scandal and is optimistic he won't have to miss any episodes.

PHOTOS: Broadcast TV's Returning Shows 2012-13

First lady Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young)
Crazy Theory: "Tammy Faye Bakker's daughter. Something had to happen to Tammy Faye Bakker to her legacy -- and her mascara -- alive!"
Biggest Challenge: Young says Mellie has lofty goals and will use her position in the White House to get what she wants -- no matter the cost. "Mellie has her eyes on the long game; every opportunity that arises, Mellie can optimize for herself," the new series regular notes. "It's been interesting to see script by script, her take on what ever the issue is at hand. She always stirs it up and she always, to her credit, pulls out the win."

Chief of Staff Cyrus (Jeff Perry)
Crazy Theory: "Quinn is the lovechild of Cyrus and Oliva, that was a crazy one!"
Biggest Challenge: Keeping a lovesick president focused on the job -- and dealing with his overzealous wife will be front and center for the duplicitous Cyrus this season, Perry offers. "Keeping Fitz on task, he's having a really hard time mentally and emotionally with trying to say goodbye to Olivia," he says. "There's such pervasive care-giving that my character is supposed to do, and as we know the first lady is capable of going rogue with her impulses of how to fix things and dealing directly with the press."

STORY: 'Scandal' Case Study: Shonda Rhimes on the Intense Finale, What's Next in Season 2

Harrison (Columbus Short)
Crazy Theory: "Quinn Perkins is the vice president's (Kate Burton) daughter. That's my theory and I think it's the most outlandish theory. I've also heard that she's ex-CIA, like she's Salt, basically."
Biggest Challenge: "Having Olivia's back blindly is going to be Harrison's biggest moral quest this season," Short warns. "Harrison is evolving into a leader, almost rogue, and that will be a challenge for him to stay loyal but also stay true to himself."

Huck (Guillermo Diaz)
Crazy Theory: "My parents thought that Quinn Perkins was Mellie and Fitz's daughter. I was poker faced and just said that anything was possible!"
Biggest Challenge: Diaz, who instills fear with a simple furrowed brow, notes that Huck won't be able to keep his dark (and violent) past tucked away for long. "Huck now is starting to realize that he has to do something about his PTSD," Diaz previews.

STORY: 'Scandal' Ups Bellamy Young to Series Regular for Season 2

Abby (Darby Stanchfield)
Crazy Theory: "Just the idea that she's related to somebody in the White House, I think that's a pretty funny theory; that she's Cyrus' daughter or niece."
Biggest Challenge: The most outspoken of all the Gladiators, Stanchfield notes that her character will have a hard time being stuck between what she wants to know but doesn't. "The office politics are a very gray area and Abby is very black and white and this season is her navigating through gray waters; it's a real tough year for Abby," she warns.

Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes)
Crazy Theory: "The craziest theory I heard was that Quinn Perkins was Amanda Tanner. I think it's crazy simply because it just doesn't make any sense! People's brains were so blown that they're willing to go to a dead girl and say that that's who I am. I got that and a ton of the president's daughter, Cyrus' daughter and a bunch of witness protection guesses. And it's none of those things and everybody is wrong. I think they'll be really shocked but also stumped again because this show moves at such a fast pace that as soon as they find out who I am, they're already on to the next question."
Biggest Challenge: Once Quinn's identity is revealed -- and it will be before the opening credits even roll -- the newest Gladiator will have a hard time picking up the pieces from the fallout over her identity, Lowes says. "Quinn's biggest challenge this season is getting people to trust her again," she notes.

Shonda Rhimes, showrunner
Crazy Theory: "She's the president's illegitimate daughter, that was a lot of what I heard. Someone told me she was Cyrus' illegitimate daughter, which I thought was really interesting because I don't think Cyrus sleeps with women. There's a very interesting dynamic out there."

Scandal premieres Thursday, Sept. 27 at 10 p.m. on ABC.

'Glee': Artie's Mysterious Plans, Familiar Faces Poised to Return and More Spoilers From the Cast

The New
Adam Rose/FOX
"Glee"

It won't take long for Glee to welcome back some of McKinley's most recent alums. While not ever member of the Fox musical's sprawling cast will be featured prominently in every episode, the series will see some familiar faces return in the fifth episode of the season when Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) make their way back to Ohio.

STORY: 'Glee' Preview: Who Breaks Up in the Season 4 Premiere?

The duo, who graduated at the end of season three and headed for the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago and Los Angeles, respectively, will come back to their former stomping grounds to lend Artie a hand with a mysterious situation.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with members of the Glee cast on Monday at Fox's annual Fall Eco Casino party in Culver City to get the scoop on what Gleeks can expect from Thursday's fourth season premiere and beyond. The results: romance, attitude and partial nudity.

Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale)
"He's enjoying that leadership role and the trust everybody has in his vision," McHale teases of what's ahead Artie. After exploring directing during the Christmas episode last year, the new senior will continue down that track and perhaps let the power go to his head a little. "I like bossing everybody around and telling them that they suck!" he says with a laugh, noting that he's not quote as extreme as Kate Hudson's tough NYADA dance teacher, Cassandra July. As for Artie's mysterious "situation" that brings back the likes of Mike and Mercedes (Amber Riley) who return together, McHale was tight-lipped. "They're helping me out," he teased. Bonus: McHale finally gets to share a song with Darren Criss, a mash-up in the Britney Spears episode.

PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 4 in Pictures

Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.)
Also set to return in Episode 5? Mike, who graduated in the season three finale, will return to McKinley during his semester break at the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. "He's a mama's boy so he wants to go back home and see his parents," Chang explains. "He also wants to go for Artie, who has a situation that he needs help on and Mike comes back and tries to be a good friend." Rest assured, Artie and the elder Changs aren't the only ones Mike is anxious to see. "Tina might be what drives him to go back; she's a big reason why he wants to go back." What their reunion is like after time apart, however, remains a big question mark.

Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz)
Someone wants to be the new Rachel and that someone may be Tina, who was told last year that it was her time to shine. "Rachel said, 'You're going to be the new me and you're going to be the lead vocalist,' so Tina is really excited about that, then all the sudden there's all this competition that comes in and thinks they're going to do it. It's definitely a fight." The results to be the new Queen Bee won't sit well with Tina, who is going to "continue her bitch streak for a little while," Ushkowitz warns. Bonus: Ushkowitz hopes that she teams with McKinley's new Queen of Mean, Kitty (Becca Tobin) team together -- on the Cheerios. "I've always been on Tina's side to be on the Cheerios at some point, so hopefully we'll see. I've been pushing for it," she says.

Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet)
"Sam feels like he has the obligation to mentor the new kids and bring in some new people because so many people graduated and are coming in and out," Overstreet says of Sam's path early in the fourth season. As for romance, the guy whose iPhone video helped former flame Mercedes (Amber Riley) make it to L.A. as a backup singer remains mum on what his chances are with the opposite sex this season. "I've been eyeing Sue very closely!" he jokes. As for Mercedes' return in Episode 5, he hints that Sam has sent her off to L.A. and will be supporting her career more than anything else. Bonus: In addition to returning to the football team, Overstreet really wants to see the Justin Bieber Experience return. "I've been talking about that with Ryan, so we'll see," he notes.

Coach Shannon Beiste (Dot Marie Jones)
The Beiste is back! Come the fifth episode, the sensitive football coach will return to the halls of McKinley. "I've shot two scenes with Jayma Mays and Matthew Morrison; I'm helping with something," she says cryptically. Fall also means that football season is back, with the guest actress Emmy nominee noting the team will also see some fresh faces join the squad. "We've got some new kids coming in," she hinted. In the meantime, Jones is prepping for the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. "I'm hoping to bring home a trophy next Saturday at the Emmys," she says, noting she'll be wearing a black Armani suit to the Creative Arts ceremony and is still prepping a potential acceptance speech. "I haven't written anything down and I've run it through my head and wind up changing it every time."

PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 4 Cast Portraits

Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist)
"Jake definitely has a lot of layers going on," newcomer Artist teases of what's ahead for Puck's (Mark Salling) younger and angry half-brother. "You'll get to see that it's justified and it's all coming from his history; all of his bad-boy behavior -- there's a reason behind it. A lot of it is going to play back to his upbringing a little. He doesn't know his brother and we'll get to explore that."

Brody Weston (Dean Geyer)
"It's all about the whole topless thing!" Geyer teases of his steamy Glee entrance. "I think Glee needed something like that to shake things up because New York is supposed to be a more adult side of the show and that's what Brody brings to the table -- even though he's not a bad boy." The guy behind Rachel's new NYADA guardian says he hopes fans concerned that Brody will be responsible for the demise of Rachel and Finn will learn that he's a genuine guy with good intentions. "I'm excited to dive deep into who he is," Geyer says, noting that all he knows of Brody's back story is that he's from Montana. "I don't think he's a douche; he's not that guy who is going to go after Rachel just to break her and Finn up."

STORY: 'Glee' Debuts 'Call Me Maybe' (Video)

Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist)
"Marley is going to be a new, fresh energy for New Directions," newcomer Benoist previews of her Glee entrance. "She's shy and a little reserved she's had a lot of struggles and has built a wall around herself because she's been made fun of quite a bit before. She's going to be getting over some fears or her self-consciousness and you'll see her journey through that." As for what's ahead for the fresh face, the actress says Marley definitely has some "drama in her love life coming." The target, meanwhile, could be a fellow newcomer.

Kitty (Becca Tobin)
"She's a little crazy but in a different way. She's eccentric but she is full of venom and very, very mean." That's how newcomer Tobin describes McKinley's newest Cheerio, who has the attitude of Santana (Naya Rivera) and allegiance to Sue (Jane Lynch) that Quinn (Dianna Agron) did early on in the series. Her first victim: Heather Morris' Brittany. "She wants to knock her out of her position and take over her place as captain of the Cheerios," she previews. "Behind every mean girl in high school is this very competitive nature and she sees something she wants and nothing stops her and she goes after it. Unfortunately, Brittany is in her way."

Glee's fourth season premieres Thursday at 9 p.m. on Fox. Hit the comments with what you're looking forward to seeing.

Call Me Maybe Glee - H 2012

Almost a year to the date since it first hit radio waves in her native Canada, Carly Rae Jepsen's excessively parodied "Call Me Maybe" has finally gotten the Glee treatment.

The Fox series dropped an extended clip of the Sept. 13 season premiere, "The New Rachel," on Monday, and it features several members of New Directions belting out the viral track.

Mandy Patinkin: 'I Would Die' for Claire Danes

Mike Coppola/Getty Images

On screen and off, Mandy Patinkin has a some very strong feelings about Claire Danes.

"I as a human being, as an artist, I am there for her. I would die for her," the actor told The Hollywood Reporter about his Homeland co-star during the show's second season premiere on Friday. "I tell you, she is one of our great gifts as an artist to be cherished and nurtured and cared for. She is a tremendous gift, and I am one of the privileged people to get to be with her and learn from her every day."

In the show, Patinkin plays Saul, the mentor and confidant to Danes' genius, bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison. He is the only one at the agency that truly knows the extent of her mental issues, which push her to the brink in the first season, and Patinkin's imagined relationship with the character is just as strong as their real-life partnership.

VIDEO: Homeland Season Two Trailer

"I consider her character akin to Anne Frank, in terms of somebody who has a savant like quality toward human nature, and understanding and empathy and compassion, with incredible wisdom and gifts," he explained. "And Sauls reason to be is to defend her and save her life at all costs, because she feels shes the answer to world peace, essentially, at the end of the day."

The young diarist and Holocaust victim was not the only major historical figure with whom Patinkin compared the Mathison character.

"He also understands that when he recruited her initially, if you find a gifted human being in any area of society -- in the arts and music and painting and writing -- its yin and yang," the actor explained. "You pay for that gift, and there are many artists that suffer from these mental struggles, because they often are struggling for what they define as the light. Shakespeare, Stephen Sondheim, all of these people look for a way to turn their darkness, the worlds darkness, into light. That is what Homeland is about to me, turning world darkness into the light of day."

PHOTOS: Stars React to Their Emmy Nominations

Much of the first two episodes of the second season were filmed in Israel, and long before he was due in the country, Patinkin ventured there on his own, traveling around and meeting various politicians, activists and other people involved in the Middle East's struggles. And just as he does with Danes, he found himself inspired.

"When you go to a place like Israel, and you take the time to immerse yourself in the real conflict, meet those people, ask the questions, meet a Palestinian young 23-year old man named Fadi Quaran who studied at Stanford, who is a gifted man and a true peacemaker in the vein of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, who says doesnt all humanity deserve justice, freedom and dignity? Who would deny that? Who would argue with that? So just meeting a young person with that kind of person, with that kind of wisdom and hope and optimism, fills your heart with hope and optimism."

As he sees it, making his show is all part of that process, as well.

"Then you get to do work, sing a song, do a television show, say words, tell stories, that are about that, that are about trying to rekindle hope and optimism in a broken world," Patinkin marveled. "In a world where in our Congress and our halls of government, people have forgotten how to talk to each other, all over the world, its an epidemic."

'American Idol' David Cook Covers Counting Crows at Tampa Bay Summerfest (Video)

American Idol Season Seven winner David Cook closed out the day-long Tampa Bay Summerfest celebration on Saturdaywith the Counting Crows' ode to a winter month -- "A Long December." Cook's concert alsoincluded the premiere ofa new song, "From Here To Zero."

"We like to throw covers in the shows," Cook told the audience before launching into a poignant, stripped down version ofthe 1996song from Counting Crow's album, "Recovering the Satellites."

Cook's show closed out an afternoon that included appearances by singer-songwriter Edwin McCain and Juliet Simms of The Voice. Sponsored by Irish 31 Pub and Eatery, the show will donate portions of the proceeds to the ALS Association, a nonprofit group that supports research to fight Lou Gehrig's disease.

Dressed plainly in a brown plaid shirt, Cook delivered a solid acoustic set with re-worked versions of his own material, including "The Last Song I'll Write For You," "Mr. Sensitive," "Heroes," "Lie" and "Life on the Moon."

Cook was especially chatty with the crowd, weaving jokes and personal stories into the evening. He told a humorous story about his time performing as a struggling musicianin Kansas City, when some "slick-looking business man" asked him if he knew how to play the Lynyrd Skynyrd athem, "Freebird." When Cook responded he didn't know how to sing that song, he got a surprise.

"[The guy] said, 'good, don't ever learn it' and he threw $20 in my case," he said. "Of all the weird lessons that could have stuck with me in the last, 15 or 16 years, that's the one that stuck. So I didn't learn 'Freebird." So it you yell for it, you 'aint getting it."

Cook, who parted ways with RCA Records last year, is currently living in Nashville writing songs for a future record.

Nick Spanos

Former Daisy Scout and American Idol finalist Haley Reinhart took time for a few inspirational words before launching into a shortbut sweet acoustic set at the Girl Scout Cookie Classic in Chicago Saturday afternoon.

"How cute are you guys?" asked the Wheeling, Illinois native. "We are here for a big celebration aren't we?"

The singer, who is promoting her new CD, Listen Up!, was part of a day-long event celebrating the Girl Scouts 100 Year Anniversary. The day, hosted by the local council of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, featured aninaugural Girl Scout Cookie Classic 5K run, walk and celebration. The daywas capped off by an afternoon of entertainment, games, sing-alongs, andan on-site vendor expo.

The 22-year old singer was celebrating a milestone of her own- herbirthday. Mid-way through the set,Reinhart was surprised by her father (who also handledacoustic guitar duties), Harry, with a cake and a singalong of "Happy Birthday" by a choir of young scouts.

The Season 10 third-place finisher also brought some Girl Scouts up on stage to inquire about scouting, with a focus on community involvement and all the benefits of the organization.

"Being a Girl Scout for memeans really being active in your community, and believing in yourself and knowing that you can really achieve something if you put your mind to it," she said.

Reinhart took on the role of a cooler big sister, with a message of empowment for young women.

"You are a group, a team, an alliance, a circle of friends, a family," she said. "I want you to remember as you grow up to take all of these things you learn now with you and really just make a difference."

Reinhart, who performed songs from her CD, including "Free" and "Hit The Ground Running," surprised the crowd with a cover of Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" -- a song she has not peformed since the Idol tour.

Reinhart is the second Idol this summer to perform for The Girl Scouts. This past June, Season 10 alum Thia Megia joined the "Rock The Mall" event in Washington, D.C.

Green Arrow and Wonder Woman on CW? 'Arrow' Bosses Sound Off

Arrow Wonder Woman Split - H 2012
The CW's "Arrow" and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman

Could Green Arrow and Wonder Woman co-exist on the same network?

With the CW a month away from launching its take on DC Comics' Green Arrow, the network seems eager to have its Stephen Amell starrer Arrow potentially joined by another member of the Justice League: Wonder Woman.

The network is eyeing an origin story for the famed female superhero, exploring Wonder Woman's alter ego Diana of Themyscira in Amazon, which is in the early stages of development under comics scribe Allan Heinberg. (Coincidentally, he co-penned a five-issue JLA arc with DC's Geoff Johns.)

So is there room enough at the network -- should Amazon move to pilot and eventually gain a series order -- for both superheroes on the CW's schedule?

"Absolutely! If there's room for a thousand reality shows, hopefully there's room for a thousand shows like this," Arrow executive producer Greg Berlanti told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday at the Paley Center's Fall Previews. "My hope is we're successful enough that we're all on the air together, that'd be great."

The CW's Arrow stars Amell(Private Practice) as Oliver Queen/Arrow, a hooded vigilante who returns home to Starling City five years after being presumed dead from a boating crash to carry out revenge upon the people who have transformed his hometown from the sprawling city it once was. The series is an adaptation of the long-running DC comic book character that first appeared in 1941.

Berlanti and writing partner Marc Guggenheim, whose superhero credits also include ABC's short-lived No Ordinary Family and the Ryan Reynolds feature Green Lantern, say a potential one-two punch of Arrow -- should both it and Amazon land a spot on the network next year -- would recall another period on the small screen.

"It harkens back to the years of my childhood where you had The Six Million Dollar Man and Wonder Woman and all these superhero-like genre shows all on the dial and all you had to do was change the channel," Arrow EP Guggenheim tells THR. "I think there's totally room for both shows. It would be fun to share a night with them; the CW programs two hours a night and that'd be a pretty kick-ass night of television."

With the warrior princess falling into the superhero with power category -- her abilities include flight, superhuman strength and agility -- that may, however, eliminate the character as comic fans currently know her from appearing on Arrow.

"Our show definitely takes place in a much more realistic world," EP Andrew Kreisberg tells THR. "There's no superpowers, superheroes and aliens. With Wonder Woman, Diana of Themyscira, there are superpowers. I don't foresee crossovers but one of the great things about superheroes is that they're constantly being reimagined. There's the Adam West and Christopher Nolan versions of Batman and one doesn't obviate the other. The Lynda Carter version was great and now the CW is hopefully developing another wonderful version that will be a nice compliment to Arrow."

Arrow, unlike the CW's previous Superman adaptation Smallville, hasn't wasted any time in introducing characters from the DC Comics arsenal. At Comic-Con, producers wowed fans with the introduction of X2's Kelly Hu as villainess China White (who shows up in the second episode) as well as Aussie actress Jessica De Gouw as the Huntress, a potential love interest to Amell's Oliver/Arrow.

Amell, meanwhile, is totally down to have fellow Justice League member Wonder Woman not just on the same network but eventually enter his world of Starling City -- on one condition. "As long as she doesn't have superpowers, then we're good!"

Arrow premieres Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. on the CW.

MTV's Video Music Awards Drop More Than 50 Percent From Last Year's Record Ratings

MTV's Video Music Awards took a nosedive in the ratings.

About 6.1 million viewers tuned into Thursday night's telecast of the VMAs, dropping more than half its audience from last year's record 12.4 million haul. In the network's target 12-34 demo, the VMAs drew a 5.3 rating.

Something to consider is how different the circumstances were for this year's VMAs. Usually broadcast on a Sunday, the move to Thursday put it in direct conflict with President Obama's planned speech at the Democratic National Convention. Just two days before the show, the network announced the ceremony would move up one hour, airing from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET, to avoid any direct conflict.

Year to year, the VMAs were down more than 50 percent in total viewers.

There was stiffer than usual competition across cable, with news networks airing multiple hours of DNC coverage.

Prior to this year's broadcast, the VMAs have been on the rise, jumping to its largest audience in a decade in 2010.

Explosive 'X Factor' Season 2 Clips Hit Online (Video)

X Factor season 2 judges panel L

With the premiere of The X Factor only five days away, Fox has released a fewpromotional previews of what viewers can expect in the second season--including a contestant butchering judge Britney Spears' song, "Circus" and another accusing Demi Lovato of using "auto-tune."

The clips underscore judge Simon Cowell's assertionsthat Spears can be "surprisingly mean," but also reveal that Lovato, who says in an interview that she is the "happy judge," has plenty of bark in her bite as well.

For instance, one auditioner, who Cowell said is "like a mouse trying to be an elephant," begins to argue that he worked "too hard" to be criticized. Lovato interrupts, telling the less than talented competitor that "a lot of people work really, really hard for their dreams, but it's not meant for everybody."

Afteran angry retort of "that's why you use auto-tune and I don't," Spears cuts him to the quick, hissing "I want to know who let you on stage...I feel uncomfortable with you even staring at me."

Ouch! Another hopeful makes Spears physically wince shaking his booty to "Circus" (prompting another Cowell-ism, "It was like you had an argument with Britney Spears, got drunk and started to scream at her"), while one kid tells Lovatohe envisions himself in a "glitter explosion."

More revelations come courtesy of judge interviews. L.A. Reid, chairman of Sony's Epic Records, said the new season feels "a little looser, younger, and lighter," while Cowell said the energy of the show "feels like ten years ago."

"I'mmore excited this year," he said. "The show is better this year...the auditions felt different than what they did a year ago. There is something in the air right now."

He also said that the reaction to the girls is electric when they walk into the room.

"I've never seen a response like it in my life. People are fainting, screaming..it's a great reaction," he said.

While comparing Lovato to an "annoying younger sister," he praises her confidence and fearlessness as a member of the panel, and added that Spears "really wants to be taken seriously as a judge."

Spears said she found a kindred spirit in Cowell, and said she respects "the fact that he says what he thinks."

"I'm usually siding with Simon..[he is] usually on my side with a lot of things," she said. "We kind of are in agreement in the direction of what we think a star should be."
