The Joker will be on small screens across the country tonight.
Despite some networks yanking violent programming in the wake of the fatal mass shooting in a Colorado movie theater screening of The Dark Knight Rises, TNT moved forward with an airing ofThe Dark Knight on Friday night. FX, too, is airing Nolan's first entry in the trilogy, Batman Begins.
"TNT is scheduled to air The Dark Knighttonight at 8 p.m.(ET/PT), with an encoretomorrow night at 8 p.m.(ET/PT). At this time, we plan to air the movie as originally scheduled," TNT confirmed in a statement. FX reps confirmed plans to air the film multiple times over the weekend.
The Dark Knight, the second of three Batman movies in Nolan's franchise, features Heath Ledger as the Joker. News reports indicated 24-year-old James Holmes dyed his hair red and told police at the scene that he was the Joker.
However, as news reports of the shooting and its aftermath unfolded and Warner Bros. cancelled the film's Paris premiere and opted to withhold reporting grosses, USA pulled an episode of Law & Order: SVU, as well as an episode of The Unit on its sibling CLOO channel. Both shows had storylines involving violent hostage situations, the networks confirmed to THR.
For its part, Showtime is making adjustments to its schedule, though the net is being tight-lipped about what fare will be pulled. "Out of sensitivity to current events, Showtime has replaced some movie titles scheduled for this weekend," a network spokesperson told THR.
Meantime, Starz is scheduled to air episodes of its famously bloody drama series Spartacus as well as crime drama American History X. The premium cable network did not immediately return requests for comment.
